On Politics

On Politics
By:"Alan Ryan"
Published on 2013-01-18 by W. W. Norton & Company

Both a history and an examination of human thought and behavior spanning three thousand years, thrillingly traces the origins of political philosophy from the ancient Greeks to Machiavelli in Book I and from Hobbes to the present age in Book II. Whether examining Lord Acton’s dictum that “absolute power corrupts absolutely” or explicating John Stuart Mill’s contention that it is “better to be a human dissatisfied than a pig satisfied,” Alan Ryan evokes the lives and minds of our greatest thinkers in a way that makes reading about them a transcendent experience. Whether writing about Plato or Augustine, de Toqueville or Thomas Jefferson, Ryan brings a wisdom to his text that illuminates John Dewey’s belief that the role of philosophy is less to see truth than to enhance experience. With this unparalleled tour de force, Ryan emerges in his own right as one of the most influential political philosophers of our time.

Class, Self, Culture

Class, Self, Culture
By:"Beverley Skeggs"
Published on 2013-11-05 by Routledge

Class, Self, Culture puts class back on the map in a novel way by taking a new look at how class is made and given value through culture. It shows how different classes become attributed with value, enabling culture to be deployed as a resource and as a form of property, which has both use-value to the person and exchange-value in systems of symbolic and economic exchange. The book shows how class has not disappeared, but is known and spoken in a myriad of different ways, always working through other categorisations of nation, race, gender and sexuality and across different sites: through popular culture, political rhetoric and academic theory. In particular attention is given to how new forms of personhood are being generated through mechanisms of giving value to culture, and how what we come to know and assume to be a 'self' is always a classed formation. Analysing four processes: of inscription, institutionalisation, perspective-taking and exchange relationships, it challenges recent debates on reflexivity, risk, rational-action theory, individualisation and mobility, by showing how these are all reliant on fixing some people in place so that others can move.

Drama for a New South Africa

Drama for a New South Africa
By:"David Graver"
Published on 1999 by Indiana University Press

The urgency of the anti-apartheid struggle created a vibrant protest theatre in South Africa. But the single-mindedness of that theatre obscured much of the diversity of South African life. In contrast, post-apartheid plays address a broad variety of social realities and employ a wider range of theatrical styles. This anthology collects the best recent examples of the new styles, subjects, and purposes of theatre in South Africa. In addition to the abiding challenges of social inequity for the black majority, these plays deal with subjects such as Islamic fundamentalism, women's rights, ecology, Afrikaans culture, and the new multi-racial life of the inner city, and they do so in ways that go beyond the expressive parameters of conventional literary drama. And the Girls in their Sunday Dresses, Purdah, and Ipi Zombie? combine the issue-oriented engagement of South Africa's popular pedagogical theatre with refined attention to the delineation of character and themes. Sophiatown mixes aspects of township musical theatre with sharply-honed dialogue and dramatic interplay among the characters. Using a more traditional dramatic form, Mooi Street Moves delineates the comedy and terror of urban life on the edge of the criminal underworld, while Crossing sketches the morbid obsessions of rural Afrikaans insularity. Horn of Sorrow combines mime and clowning traditions from Europe and South Africa in athletic performances that intertwine environmental and social development issues. In his introduction, David Graver illuminates the development of this drama and discusses how the protest plays of the apartheid era have combined with other influences to create distinct new theatrical forms to grapple with new social controversies of a democratic South Africa. Graver also provides helpful introductions to each of the seven plays, as well as a glossary of foreign terms and phrases.

Through observations based on visits to zoos and conversations with zoo owners and keepers all over the world, the authors suggest that, while animals may not need zoos, urban societies seem to. A new preface takes note of dramatic changes in the perceived role of zoos that have occurred since the book's original publication.

Ice Ages

Ice Ages
By:"John Imbrie","Katherine Palmer Imbrie"
Published on 1986 by Harvard University Press

This book tells the exciting story of the ice ages--what they were like, why they occurred, and when the next one is due. The solution to the ice age mystery originated when the National Science Foundation organized the CLIMAP project to study changes in the earth's climate over the past 700,000 years. One of the goals was to produce a map of the earth during the last ice age. Scientists examined cores of sediment from the Indian Ocean bed and deciphered a continuous history for the past 500,000 years. Their work ultimately confirmed the theory that the earth's irregular orbital motions account for the bizarre climatic changes which bring on ice ages. This is a tale of scientific discovery and the colorful people who participated: Louis Agassiz, the young Swiss naturalist whose geological studies first convinced scientists that the earth has recently passed through an ice age; the Reverend William Buckland, an eccentric but respected Oxford professor who fought so hard against the ice-age theory before accepting it; James Croll, a Scots mechanic who educated himself as a scientist and first formulated the astronomic theory of ice ages; Milutin Milankovitch, the Serbian mathematician who gave the astronomic theory its firm quantitative foundation; and the many other astronomers, geochemists, geologists, paleontologists, and geophysicists who have been engaged for nearly a century and a half in the pressing search for a solution to the ice-age mystery.

It makes a special point of seeing drama as intended for acting and performance, and it therefore emphasizes the role of the spectator at a play and the sort of theatre for which drama was written. The performance approach to the study of plays finally clarifies the different kinds of drama (comedy, tragedy, melodrama, and farce) and identifies its forms (realism, stylization, and symbolism).
